University of Zimbabwe 5th Research Innovation and Industrialisation Week

Dates: October 30 – November 1, 2024
Theme: "Promoting Innovation Ecosystems to Advance Value Chains for Zimbabwe’s Industrialisation"

This event brought together researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs to:

  1. Showcase emerging technologies and innovations that contribute to Zimbabwe’s industrialization and modernization.
  2. Communicate the latest research and knowledge essential for navigating today’s rapidly evolving landscape, along with insights into future developments.
  3. Foster talent development to drive impactful discoveries and lasting partnerships.

Participation:
A total of 278 abstracts were submitted for oral, poster, and exhibit presentations. These contributions were organized into seven sub-themes:

  1. Scientific and Technical Innovations - Focusing on indigenous fruits and underutilized crops in value chains.
  2. Agricultural Innovations - Addressing sustainable food security and food systems in a changing climate.
  3. Renewable and Green Energy - Developing technologies for economic growth.
  4. Health Delivery Systems - Technologies centered on human and livestock health.
  5. Mineral Extraction and Processing - Eco-friendly technologies and innovations.
  6. E-commerce and Digital Trade Platforms - Supporting industrial value chains.
  7. Social Inclusion and Youth Participation - Innovations promoting a more inclusive and industrialized Zimbabwe.

Special Guests and Events:

  • Honorable Minister Dr. Frederick Shava (Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Development) served as the Guest of Honor on November 1.
  • Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Paul Mapfumo was the Guest of Honor on the final day.

1.    Presidential Award: Hatify Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd trading as Robestos Products (Tendai Makore) awarded with a Certificate and Prize Money  for the optimisation of the extraction of omega-3 fatty acids from both edible insects and indigenous plant sources. The extracted oils will be encapsulated to enhance stability and bioavailability.

2.    Award for Outstanding Early Career Researcher, Shingirayi Zengeni, awarded with a Certificate and Prize Money  for the optimisation of the traditional medicines using various nanotechnologies for improved efficacy, safety as well as standardising dosage forms for potential commercialisation and incorporation into mainstream medicine.

3.    Award for Health Sciences, Prof Jephat Chifamba awarded with a Certificate and Prize Money for the for the PURE study investigating the impact of modernisation and globalisation on health behaviours and how risk factors develop and influence cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung diseases, cancers, kidney disease, brain health and injuries.
