ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Global, Public Health and Family Medicine at the University ofZimbabwe, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is a multi-disciplinary department that aims to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities in Zimbabwe and beyond. Its vision is to be a centre of excellence in teaching, research, service delivery, innovation and industrialisation in global,public health and family medicine in Zimbabwe as well as internationally. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate students with courses in public health, global health, epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, health systems research,health education and promotion, maternal and child health, health economics and financing, family medicine, and occupational and environmental health. The courses cover a wide range of topics, with a primary emphasis on disease prevention and control, as well as health system strengthening. Students are taught the value of the family in providing holistic care, and they are given opportunities to participate in research and community outreach activities that allow them to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world settings. Across the faculty, the department provides technical support and expertise in the professional conduct of health research. The department also conducts research and provides consultancy services in these areas, contributing to the generation and dissemination of evidence-based knowledge and interventions that can inform policy and practice.The department take part in and support public health training and capacity building for health workers at various levels in Zimbabwe and beyond. The department has a strong collaboration with local and international partners. Locally, the department works with the Government of Zimbabwe through the Ministry of Health and Child Care, in implementing an effective public health system by assisting in the development ofpolicies and guidelines, as well as the conduct of evaluations and operational research.
