Curriculum Models in Early Childhood Programmes

This module is an overview of the theoretical models underpinning early childhood curricula. The module emphasises the history and development of the different curriculum models, the pedagogical dimensions and features of the emergent curriculum as practiced in the models. Students are expected to construct an understanding of how to develop an emergent curriculum based on children’s interest and needs. As a capstone module requirement; students should produce a multi-purpose media-kit to foster learning and development of either infants or toddlers, taking cognisance of diversity in developmental needs.

Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Early Childhood Development This module is a survey of the historical, philosophical, and theoretical basis of current early childhood development programme practices. Social and economic forces are analysed within the context of shaping early childhood development programmes. The module examines children’s behaviour and learning within education contexts, with particular emphasis on diverse environments. Students gain competencies to design and implement infant and toddler, preschool, and infant education programmes guided by the relevant philosophies

Child Ailments, First Aid and Emergence Care in Early Childhood

The aim of the module is to provide relevant knowledge and skills in rendering first aid treatment and managing child ailments. This module equips students with knowledge and skills on how to recognise and respond to an emergency. The module also prepares students to make appropriate decisions regarding first aid care for injuries or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives.

Children in Difficult Circumstances

 

This module explores factors that negatively impact the development of the whole child including socioeconomic status, family dynamics, environmental factors, and traumatic life changes. Students examine the impact of exposure to multiple risk factors on brain development and learning in diverse environments. The module analyses the impact of national policy on early childhood programme in relation to micro and macro contexts. Students design strategies for impactful changes that build resilience among young children, through curriculum adaptation, family outreach, and modification of learning environments.

Child Welfare Protection Laws and Conventions

 This module provides prospective practicing educators and school administrators with a working knowledge of relevant conventions, laws, policies, regulations and research related to child welfare protection. Students examine the significance of cultural, historical, socioeconomic contexts on beliefs about child development. An analysis of the influence and impact of state, community and family decisions on children’s welfare is done. In addition, students reflect upon and apply this knowledge to create safe nets enabling zones for optimum child growth, learning and development

Competence Based Early Childhood Curriculum

This module is designed to cultivate school leaders and educators for the 21st century teaching and learning, that are self-motivated to influence system transformation. It provides students an overview of the history, theories, and contemporary influences of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) and pedagogical dimensions. Students examine the Learning Areas that constitute the National CBC in relation to Developmentally Appropriate Practice, inclusivity, community engagement and industrialisation. Specific attention is paid to application of policy and research to curb challenges confronted by educators and school leaders in varying school-community contexts and cultures.

Infants and Toddlers:  Dimensions of Learning and Development

 

The formative years of life in the process of child development are critical as they form a strong foundation for later life development. This module examines characteristics of infants and toddlers which inform best practice for personnel responsible for infant-toddler care and education. This module equips students with requisite knowledge and skills for designing developmentally appropriate programmes for infants and toddlers in and out of the school context; in collaboration with other ECD stakeholders.

Reading Methodologies across the curriculum

This module is designed for post-A-Level and post- Diploma students who hold a Certificate or Diploma in Infant or Preschool Education, or Early Childhood Development (ECD). The module is designed for Early Childhood Development (ECD) students pursuing the Bachelor of Education degree in ECD and Social policy. The basic aim of the module is to introduce students to the reading methodologies relevant for the learners in ECD schools. The module provides opportunities for designing and implementing developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive reading programmes for ECD learners

Technology in Early Childhood Development

The module helps students reflect on the role various forms of electronic and digital technology can play in the teaching/learning process and how to engage these processes in the ECD classroom. Students are introduced to 21st century skills related to technology for engagement of learners in the formative years. In addition, the module exposed to basic theories of communication, selection, evaluation and research, and will be assisted in determining appropriate applications of these theories and techniques in educational settings. Drill and practice outside of class time will be necessary to reach a high degree of competence.

The module provides a platform for students to administer research by applying educational tools in research and development for development of innovative solutions to the developmental trajectory of the children in early childhood schools.

The Education Act Statutes and Administration Tools

 The module introduces students to the Education Act, related statutes and administrative tools that guide practice in the Junior school education. The module takes a practical approach where students examine the policy documents and visit schools to observe and document gaps and opportunities existing between policy and practice. Students are expected to contribute to the transformation of existing policies and practices in Junior education.

Health, Disaster and Risk Management in Junior School Teacher Education Development The module equips students with knowledge and skills to provide healthy school and community environments. Students appreciate the need to live healthy and safe lives both at home and at school. The module explores the nature and scope of global change science, environmental hazards and human response.  It covers measurement, observation, monitoring, prediction and mitigation of environmental hazards so as to prepare students for effective disaster response and management.  Responses to earthquake, drought and cyclone disasters are covered.

Literacy and Numeracy for Life-long Learning

The focus of this module is to articulate the importance of reading, writing and number as the basis and vehicle for learning across the curriculum. The aim, therefore, is to boost students’ confidence in teaching these basics in the junior primary school. In addition, the need to develop skills for monitoring the reading levels and writing skills of learners is critical. The module, therefore, focuses on integrating reading, writing and number with other macro skills and emphasize developing reading texts, models, processes and assessment procedures.

The module focuses on developing personal and collaborative skills such as adaptability, sensitivity, problem-solving and team building which are critical for relationship building and professional conduct in work places and the community. Soft skills are critical for everyday functioning also enhance healthy and responsible citizenship.

Mentoring, Guidance and Counselling in Schools and Communities In the face of a fast changing local and international social environments, communities need to turn to education for support and advice. In that respect, this module provides students with knowledge and skills to mentor and counsel all age groups in a professional manner. Students, thus, require solid understanding of the theory and practice of mentoring, guidance and counselling. In addition, this is a skills development module which prepares students for healthy relations and operations during internship and everyday life in the community.

The module examines the elements, processes, and techniques involved in the development and implementation of organisational strategy in a competitive environment with unprecedented levels of change and disruption. The module is intended to expose students to how a winning strategy is designed and delivered as well as the importance of effectively applying operational and strategic decisions in ensuring organizational profitability and growth. Students are expected to develop solutions and systems for effective management of Junior Education schools.

Fundamentals of Accounting

This module provides prospective and practicing educators and school administrators with a working knowledge of financial aspects of managing Junior school. It emphasises social justice at Junior school level through examining laws, policies and models related to budgeting and finance. Students are expected to plan and design sustainable budgets in Junior schools. The module is suitable for all levels of financial and mathematical reasoning ability and there is no background knowledge required beyond an interest in learning about this critical component of running Junior schools.

Research Project

This module examines the function accountancy in the running of an organisation.  As entrepreneurs, students are taught to analyse accounting information in order to make organisational planning and control decisions. Although students are not expected to become accountants and bookkeepers, the expectation is to produce professionals who are literate in accounting and able to manage Junior schools.
