Work Experience
Currently with University of Zimbabwe as Associate Professor heading the Power and Energy Systems Group. He teaches a wide range of Electrical and Power Systems topics including Electrical Protection and High Voltage Engineering. He is a moderator for the several courses at the Polytechnic of Namibia including Power Systems the Renewable Energy Course. Prof Chikuni supervise BTech and MTech students and plans are very advanced to supervise DTech students also. Is very much involved in review of publications in his field and also in conference organisation. In 2013 he was on the Local Organising Committee of IEEE ICIT2013 Chair of Power Systems and Smartgrid Track. Served on the Editorial committees of the DUE and ICUE conferences. Previously was Chair of the Local Organising Committee of the IEEE Africon 2007 Conference held in Windhoek. Also Session Chair and Convener of some Tracks in past events of the International Conference on Engineering Education, (ICEE). While at the University of Zimbabwe he was Project Manager of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) funded renewable energy project. Prof Chikuni holds a First Class BEng in Electrical Engineering (University of Sierra Leone), MSc Electrical Power Engineering (University of Manchester) and a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Wales (UK). An author of the Electrical Engineering textbook, “Concise Higher Electrical Engineering” (JUTA Academic, Cape Town) and “The Essential Matlab / Simulink for Engineers and Scientists” (JUTA Academic, Cape Town). Also author of two book chapters in the areas of Engineering Education (BEGEL HOUSE, USA) and Substation and Power System Automation (INTECH PUBLISHERS, CROATIA). Contributor to Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) book, “A Solar Home Systems Handbook” by A. Shiota.
Chartered Engineer and Member of IET, and IEEE (currently registering with ECSA, the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe). He served on the Council of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers, being in the grade of Fellow.
Prof Chikuni can be characterised as a very approachable person interested in power energy issues, in particular renewable energy, power systems and machines. He is also interested in capacity building and has numerous international academic and industry contacts with over 10 years industry experience and over 15 years with universities. He derives a lot of pleasure in mentoring young University students and has devised several techniques some of which are the subject of his publications.
