| MEC521 | Microeconomic Theory | This module provides the foundations of microeconomic theory and analysis at the graduate level. It equips students with an advanced level understanding of microeconomic concepts, tools and modelling skills needed as building blocks for empirical analysis and prediction of outcomes of human behaviour in the allocation of scarce resources. It imparts modelling and analytical skills necessary for producing economic advisory services to government, private sector, NGO’s and International Organisations. The module seeks to produce research, policy analytical skills and advisory services that support innovation and industrialization process in developing countries. Students will acquire the ability to apply the knowledge, conceptual skills and tools in research, analysis of real-world economic problems and in policy discourse on economic issues. |

Macroeconomic Theory |
This module provides an overview of the closed and open economy macroeconomic theory. It discusses the various theories that explain issues related to the determination of output. The Keynesian-Neoclassical conflict and the rise of the rational expectations are discussed at great length. This module is an advanced treatment of the contemporary macroeconomic theory. Understanding the different macroeconomic theories will enable students to develop macroeconomic models that are relevant Zimbabwe. The module equips students with relevant macroeconomic tools that are important for analyzing macroeconomic issues. The knowledge gained from this module enables students to undertake research in macroeconomic issues which is important for the creation of a stable macroeconomic economic environment in Zimbabwe. |
| MEC525 | Quantitative Methods 1 | This module is designed to equip post-graduate students with up-to-date mathematical techniques for economists. The module advances the students’ knowledge of mathematical applications necessary to tackle economic problems and provide objective solutions. The module equips students to be able to understand and apply mathematical techniques in solving economic problems. It also helps students to grasp the relevance and use of modern mathematical techniques in applied economics and empirical research. |

International Trade Theory and Policy |
This module provides students with advanced understanding of various theories that explain causes, patterns and volume of trade among countries as well as trade policies that govern the conduct of national and global trade. The knowledge gained from this module enables students to contribute to the formulation of trade and industrial policies and programmes that are critical in addressing the de-industrialization which the country is currently grappling with. Students will use knowledge gained to design, develop and contribute to development of economic models for boosting the country’s exports which are key in addressing the country’s balance of payment position. |
| MIET501 | Industrial Organization | This module focuses on the theoretical and empirical work in industrial economics. It focuses at the individual firm and the way economic decisions are made. Particular attention is paid to the behaviour of firms in oligopolistic market structures. This module exposes students to theories, tools of analysis and contemporary issues in industrial economics. It is concerned with the extent to which theoretical and empirical work can aid in the formulation of industrial policies. Special attention is paid to issues relevant to Zimbabwe and other developing countries. The knowledge gained enables students to solve problems that characterize Zimbabwe’s industrial sectors. |
| MEC524 | Macroeconomic Theory Policy | This module focuses on the current macroeconomic controversies, theoretical and policy issues. It is structured to ensure that macroeconomic problems and analysis that are important in the 21st Century are fully treated. The module places more emphasis on macroeconomic problems that Zimbabwe is currently facing. It equips students with macroeconomic tools that enable them to tackle Zimbabwe’s macroeconomic problems. It also provides a critical analysis of Zimbabwe’s monetary and fiscal policies. The knowledge gained enables students to develop and employ the correct macroeconomic tools in explaining Zimbabwe’s macroeconomic issues. This will enable students to solve Zimbabwe’s economic problems of low economic growth, high level of inflation and unemployment, shortages of foreign currency, budget deficits and debt problems. |

Applied Industrial Economics |
This module is concerned with the economic problems and policy issues that arise from the activities of firms. It focuses on policy issues and the role of governments. The module is devoted to competition policy (including merger policy), privatization, regulation and industrial policy. The module relies on case studies especially reports of Zimbabwe’s Competition and Tariff Commission. The module also discusses the various industrial strategies that are critical to the industrial development of Zimbabwe. It focuses on cases studies especially from the Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs). It provides students with the opportunity to understand and appreciate the problems faced by Zimbabwe’s industrial sectors and also develops an awareness of possible solutions to these problems. The knowledge gained enables students to analyse and develop industrial policies with a view to solve Zimbabwe’s industrial problems. |
| MIET507 | Game Theory and Economic Applications | This module introduces students to game theory and other recent advances in microeconomics in analysing and predicting outcomes of economic decision making in situations involving strategic interaction and interdependence. Most real-life decisions and economic policy formulation are made in environments characterised by market failure, externalities, public goods, asymmetric information, adverse selection, moral hazard, principal agent relationships, poorly defined property rights and imperfect markets with oligopolistic structures. Game theory concepts and tools impart skills that enable students to analyse situations where economic agents behave strategically. Students gain new insights to derive and predict outcomes of such behaviour. Research outputs, policy analysis and economic advisory services are Economists’ inputs into policy making, efficient resource allocation, innovation and industrialisation. The module provides the basic theoretical concepts, tools and skills that can be applied in a variety of elective modules. The module also imparts analytical skills and the ability to follow recent advances in microeconomics, understand articles in academic journals and to engage in intelligent economic discourse. |
| MIET509 | Econometrics | This is a post-graduate level module designed to equip students with a solid and up-to-date grounding in modern econometrics. It integrates the teaching of econometrics theory with that of the practice of econometrics and data analysis. The module helps students to appreciate both the theoretical background of econometrics and the application of econometric techniques in the real world. Econometrics prepares students to be able to conduct objective quantitative research and provide robust policy implications. This module also combines classroom lectures with computer-assisted laboratory work which equips students with hands-on skills. |

International Finance |
International Finance is a post-graduate module offered in the second semester. It is a sequel to International Trade Theory and Policy postgraduate module. The module equips students with skills to deal with the monetary and macroeconomic relations between countries, the problems associated with balance of payment equilibria, problems of the international monetary systems such as currency crisis, international policy coordination, and debt, among others. The module enables students to develop and design robust economic models in international finance, foreign exchange markets & international parity conditions, international payment systems, balance of payments adjustments, and models of exchange rate determination, open economy macroeconomics (fiscal and monetary policy under different exchange rate regimes) and international capital movements to provide sustainable solutions to the problems of balance of payment equilibria, currency crisis, international policy coordination and debt, among others thus contributing to sustainable economic growth and development. |
| MIET570 | Dissertation | Students will do a dissertation related to theory and knowledge gained from the programme. The dissertation will offer students an opportunity to apply computational knowledge on complex economic problems. |
