MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MINERAL AND NATURAL RESOURCE ECONOMICS (MMNR)

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MINERAL AND NATURAL RESOURCE ECONOMICS (MMNR)

Module CodeModule NameDescription
MNR520 Environmental Economics Natural resources management requires the knowledge of both how to efficiently manage natural resources as inputs in production and to efficiently manage production output to preserve the environment. Environmental economics is therefore designed to equip post graduate students with skills on how to manage production emissions-related environmental hazards. This module is a one semester module designed for post graduate students in economics. It equips students with theoretical and environmental
MECD501 Microeconomics This module is the first in a sequence of two semesters long module. Game Theory and Economic Applications). Students enrolling for this module should have a good undergraduate level training in microeconomics and an understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics (set theory, calculus and matrix algebra). This module equips students with the theoretical foundations and tools necessary to follow contemporary microeconomics literature, engage in research and participate in
MECD503 Mathematical Techniques for Economists This module is designed to equip post-graduate students with up-to-date mathematical techniques for economists. The module advances the students’ knowledge of mathematical applications necessary to tackle economic problems and provide objective solutions. The module equips students to be able to understand and apply mathematical techniques in solving economic problems. It also helps students to grasp the relevance and use of modern mathematical techniques in applied economics and empirical research.
MNR528 Mineral Economics This module is designed to equip students with knowledge that will enable them to critically analyse the role of mineral industries in national development with emphasis on developing countries, especially Zimbabwe. Focus will also be on understanding peculiar characteristics of the minerals industries including variations in ore grade, non-renewable asset, increases in funding with increase in depth, wealth conservation.
MNR522 Waste Management Economics Waste management economics studies the costs, revenues, and financial implications of handling waste, viewing it as both a costly by-product and a valuable resource, with sustainable practices creating jobs, saving money on landfill/pollution, and driving a circular economy through recycling and energy recovery, though poor management leads to significant societal costs.
MNR523 Climate Change and Eco Systems Climate change is real and is directly affecting the ecosystem and the universe at large. Its indirect effects are undoubtedly affecting economic policy interventions and resource allocation. Therefore, this module aims to equip students with an   in-depth knowledge of what climate change entails and in particular, how climate change is affecting key sectors of the economy.
MNR524 Natural Resource Economics Natural Resource Theory and Policy is designed to equip post-graduate students with a solid and up-to-date foundation in natural resource theory and policy. The dearth of empirical studies due to non-existent data is a serious impediment in the application of natural resource theory. One way of narrowing this gap between theory and practice is through solving numerical problems. This module therefore prepares students to be able to make the theory operational through the application of numerical techniques.
MNR525 Mining Projects Economics and feasibility This module integrates the technical, economic and management contents in the feasibility study of a new mining project. Marketing mineral products, abundance, price, credit assessment and project financing; cut-off grades, ore reserve estimation; mining method selection and justification; cost estimation; taxation, equity and debt financing, true cost of capital, leverage, ratio analysis; project analysis; risk assessment; feasibility studies.
MNR526 Integrated Mineral and Natural Resources Management The module combines the optimal management strategies of both mineral resources and other natural resources at a global scale, then in Zimbabwe in particular. There are three key pillars (and hence topics) in this module. These are the utilization, conservation and general development strategies of minerals and other natural resources.
MNR526 Energy Economics and Policy This module prepares students for the energy sector. Optimisation of energy use and understanding of energy policy are the key issues in this module.
MNR570 Dissertation Students will do a dissertation related to theory and knowledge gained from the programme.  The dissertation will offer students an opportunity to apply computational knowledge on complex economic problems.
