Getting Started |
The course will provide tips and guidelines on how to get started on your postgraduate studies. The objective is to create an awareness with regards to application and registration procedures; fees structure; structure of a research proposal; identifying a research area/topic; formulating a research title; research proposal writing; identifying a potential supervisor. |

Research Methodology |
The course focuses on understanding the key components and issues around research methodology. The objective is to create an awareness and appreciation of research paradigms/ approaches, i.e. qualitative, quantitative and mixed research; research designs; sampling techniques; piloting; ethical considerations in research; data collection methods; data management, i.e. sorting, organising and coding of data; data presentation, analysis, interpretation and discussion. |

Academic Writing for Postgraduate Students and Supervisors |
The course focuses on understanding the key components and dictates of academic writing. This course covers key concepts in academic writing, namely, construction of logical arguments; proofreading; editing; paragraphing; basic rhetorical modes (narration, description, exposition); the writing process; punctuation; stylistics; coherence; academic vocabulary; hedging; academic conventions. The objective is to equip participants with critical skills for quality academic writing. |

Online Reference Management for Postgraduate Students and Supervisors |
The course will cover key considerations regarding online referencing which include citations and referencing styles; electronic reference management and practical sessions. The course aims to enhance participants’ knowledge of online reference management skills and techniques. |
The Postgraduate Centre will host workshops in February 2018 as follows:
i. Seminar series for DPhil students (Humanities cluster): 1-2 February 2018
ii. Seminar series for DPhil students (Sciences cluster): 1-2 February 2018
iii. Postgraduate Centre Workshops: 5-8 February 2018
The venues are as follows:
i. Humanities Lecture Theatre 200 (HLT 200) and Humanities Lecture Theatre 300 (HLT 300) for the seminar series (i and ii, above).
ii. Humanities Lecture Theatre 200 (HLT 200) for the Postgraduate Centre Workshops for the period 5-7 February 2018 and the Main Library for 8 February 2018.
The workshops are scheduled to start at 0830 hours.
