MASTER OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION EDUCATION SPECIALISING IN CHEMISTRY (MSSTIEC)

Module CodeModule NameDescription
MEC502 Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Photochemistry This module covers basic principles of pharmacognosy and phytochemistry that are applicable to botanical medicines, isolation and purification of phytochemicals, bioactivities of phytochemicals, herbal product manufacture, and quality control solubility.  Principles of synergistic action between constituents and herbal formulas or combinations the relevance and application of pharmacognosy and phytochemistry to the efficacy and viability of medicinal plants, herbal product production, clinical practice. Evaluation of the quality of herbal extracts; and the types of compounds associated with specific actions (both therapeutic and potentially toxic) in commonly used herbs and agroforestry.
MEC503  Spectro-Analytical Chemistry  This module will introduce students to Good Laboratory Practice, approaches to biochemical investigations, Making buffer solutions potentiometric and polarographic techniques- pH measurements, Spectroscopic techniques –UV/Vis Chromatographic Techniques- Paper, TLC and Column, basic statistical techniques.
MEC504  Pharmaceutical Chemistry  This module aims to introduce you to the general principles of pharmacological active ingredients and the effect on the major organs. You will develop an understanding of techniques applicable to research in the field of pharmacology. Toxicology studies the body's response to drugs, foods, and toxic substances. Fundamentals of pharmacology and mechanisms of action are examined for acute and chronic exposure derived from environmental, dietary, occupational and pharmaceutical sources. In this module, the general toxicological principles and overview of toxic substances shall be covered. The module includes basic description how substances are absorbed by, distributed and eliminated from the body. The part contains awareness about toxicokinetic models and the processes of biotransformation.
MEC505 Nanotechnology in Chemistry This module introduces students to the applications of nanoparticles in therapeutics. Topics cover the nature of nanoparticles, determination of the size of nanoparticles, (i.e nanosized, TEM & SEM), applications i.e delivery of drugs  heat, light or other substances to specific types of cells (such as cancer cells) and the synthesis of nanoparticles from natural products.
MEC501 Medicinal and Natural Product Chemistry This module will introduce students to classification of natural products, structural and functional relationships, metabolism of natural products, starches,  natural products as cancer chemo-preventive agents, Methods of extraction of natural products, analysis of natural products, Use of online libraries for identification
MEC506 Culture and Language in Science Education

This module makes students aware of the effects of the culture of science, culture of school science, culture of science classrooms, and cultures of individual actors in the science educative process so that they take appropriate mitigating actions in order for learners to enjoy the learning of science. The module also examines the role of the medium of instruction in the teaching and learning of science.

MEC570 Dissertation The module provides students with range of tools, approaches, strategies, data collection methods and concepts that are necessary in educational research It provides them with the knowledge and abilities to undertake their own research. The module also focuses on a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and data analysis and prepares students to carrying out meaningful educational research. The module prepares students on issues related to language, referencing, writing style, lay-out when writing a research report and also how to write a comprehensive research proposal. Students will be exposed to various computer mediated tools such as tools and technologies for data collection and analysis.
