Aetiology and Effects of Various Impairments on Education Foundations of Inclusive and Special Needs Education

This module explores the aetiology (causes) and effects of various impairments on education, focusing on how different types of impairments (intellectual, physical, sensory and emotional) impact learning and academic outcomes. It delves into the biological, genetic, environmental and socio-cultural factors contributing to impairments, as well as the educational challenges faced by students with these conditions. The module will also cover interventions, support strategies and inclusive educational practices to mitigate the effects of impairments on learners, ensuring they can thrive in the educational setting.

Foundations of Inclusive and Special Needs Education

Provides a foundational understanding of inclusive and special needs education (SNE). It explores the history, theories, principles, and policies that have shaped the field, with a focus on the importance of inclusion for all learners, particularly those with disabilities or special needs. The module will address the different types of special needs, including physical, intellectual, sensory and emotional disabilities and explore strategies for providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Students will also gain insights into how inclusive education promotes equity and access to quality education for all.
EFSE123 Inclusive Pedagogy and Curriculum Management This module introduces inclusive teaching approaches that address the needs of learners with different backgrounds, impairments and learning styles. Inclusive education demands that teachers use teaching, learning and assessment methods that are responsive to the needs of all learners in the classroom. This will help to create a conducive learning environment and further enable every learner to participate actively in the classroom regardless of their individual differences. The module will enable students to produce toolkits, training manuals, screening tools and models that can promote inclusive education.
EFSE124 Inclusive Schools Management This module provides an introduction to the principles, strategies and practices of managing inclusive schools. It explores the role of school leaders in creating an inclusive environment that supports diverse learners, including those with disabilities and other special needs. The module examines the administrative, pedagogical and organizational responsibilities of school leaders, focusing on policies, practices and frameworks that promote inclusion. Students will also learn about the importance of collaboration, community involvement and resource management to create schools that are accessible to all students.
