MASTER OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION EDUCATION SPECIALISING IN MATHEMATICS (MSSTIEM)

MASTER OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION EDUCATION SPECIALISING IN MATHEMATICS (MSSTIEM)

Module CodeModule NameDescription

MEM501

Numerical Analysis  While the earlier module of Numerical Methods aimed more on introducing to students computational techniques that build on initial approximations for solving some classes of mathematical problems, especially equations, this module extends the treatment in both range, scope, and depth while examining the analytical bases that underlie and justify deployment of such techniques.  Transcendental and differential equations, for example, are also considered here.  An attempt is also made in the module to understand motivations, contexts, and processes of developing numerical techniques for solving certain kinds of mathematical problems and reflections of efficacy of the methods
MEM503  Functional Analysis  Although functional analysis can provide interpretive and operational frameworks for some mathematical problems that arise in applied sciences, engineering, and even for such areas as numerical analysis; connections to these contexts are often experienced as tenuous by students. Yet that foundational aspect of mathematical analysis in applied contexts typically remains hidden and elusive to many students in advanced mathematics.  The purpose of this module is thus to focus students’ attention on the abstract but foundational aspects of mathematics generally and analysis in particular, and in the process, they may also see the direction in which real analysis—covered in earlier modules—naturally extends.   While students are expected to consolidate their appreciation of the style of thinking characteristic of the pure mathematics field of analysis—which is about structural properties of mathematical objects—the module should help construct a ‘larger picture’ of mathematics through examination  of and proofs involving relations with abstract but broad such concepts as metric spaces and compact operators
MEM504 Environmental Mathematics The main purpose of the module is to expose students to and emphasize modelling aspect of mathematics, thereby increasing their appreciation of mathematics as a tool for problem solving in everyday life. The module strives to get students develop some skills in applying standard mathematical modelling techniques in dealing with situations drawn from diverse life-worlds that characterize our environment.  The module achieves this through (a) engaging with analytical and computational techniques of mathematical modelling in environmental problems such as population dynamics; epidemiology and optimization situations that often arise in business, industry, health care, educational and social provisions, etc., (b) highlighting value of mathematics in decision-making and asking strategic questions  that facilitate viewing some real world problems with productive perspectives that could draw on the facility of mathematics to understand some aspects of our world.  Through this module students are expected to learn using real-world data to create mathematical models, predict results based on the given data, make and test conjectures, and simulate mathematical models using appropriate software packages
MEM505 Vector Analysis The module emphasizes the role of vector calculus as a tool in solving applied mathematics problems. The concepts of vector and tensor coupled with and operations with them are central to the study of vector analysis. Concepts are described geometrically and then examined analytically in order to develop different perspectives of the objects they describe and relationships among them.  The kind of analysis involved in such a module makes the relationship between theory and applications a bit more apparent.  The overall expected learning outcome of the module is that of familiarizing students with the vector analytic approach to solving problems which arise mostly in engineering, physics, sporting, and other everyday life contexts

MEM506 Culture and Language in Science Education This module makes students aware of the effects of the culture of science, culture of school science, culture of science classrooms, and cultures of individual actors in the science educative process so that they take appropriate mitigating actions in order for learners to enjoy the learning of science. The module also examines the role of the medium of instruction in the teaching and learning of science
MEM570  Dissertation  The module provides students with range of tools, approaches, strategies, data collection methods and concepts that are necessary in educational research It provides them with the knowledge and abilities to undertake their own research. The module also focuses on a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and data analysis and prepares students to carrying out meaningful educational research. The module prepares students on issues related to language, referencing, writing style, lay-out when writing a research report and also how to write a comprehensive research proposal. Students will be exposed to various computer mediated tools such as tools and technologies for data collection and analysis

Module CodeModule NameDescription
MEP502 Advanced Medical Physics The module places more emphasis on radiation oncology (beyond X-ray and radiotherapy) and diagnostic imaging physics encompassing magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and the use of lasers in medicine as practiced in modern medical institutions.
MEP503  Telecommunication Systems  This module covers the following areas: introduction to telecommunications, an overview of the telecommunications network, transmission, mobile communications, data communications, future developments in telecommunications. Students will have a broad understanding of telecommunication systems
MEP504  Renewable Energy Systems  The module deals with the fundamentals of the different renewable energy technologies: wind, solar, bioenergy, hydro, and geothermal energy; General overview of renewable energy technologies and applications including costs implications; technical and non-technical constraints a limiting wide spread use/dissemination of renewable energy are also covered.
MEP505  Current Developments in Physics  This module examines recent breakthroughs in physics research. It reinforces, in students, the idea that physics knowledge is tentative hence they should also inculcate the same in their students taking into cognizance that robust research and validation by the community of practice is required before knowledge is altered.
MEP501 Condensed Matter Physics The module deals with crystalline and amorphous materials, condensed matter classified by inter-atomic forces, scattering, reciprocal space and the brillouin zones, phonons, thermal properties, the free electron Fermi gas, energy bands, classification of materials as liquids, Metals/Semiconductors
MEP506 Culture and Language in Science Education

This module makes students aware of the effects of the culture of science, culture of school science, culture of science classrooms, and cultures of individual actors in the science educative process so that they take appropriate mitigating actions in order for learners to enjoy the learning of science.
